Video-taped beating of Florida girl - Teach your kids self-defense and common sense

Have you heard about

the vicious, cowardly beating of a 16 year old girl by 6 so-called friends? Not only that, but the 6 so-called friends taped it…and were going to post the video to MySpace and Youtube? To wit:

…For the eight Florida teens accused of imprisoning, beating and videotaping 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay as they brutalized her for more than half an hour, the events of March 30 have led to kidnapping and battery charges that cast a dark shadow over their future.

For the rest of the world, the case has shone a bright light on the negative potential of the Internet.

The case has attracted media attention far and wide and has caused many to ask difficult questions about how the beating could have happened, what went wrong in this group of children, and what role the technology played…..MORE…..

First off, the 6 girls AREN’T CHILDREN. My single-digit kids are children. 4th graders are children. 16 year olds are TEENAGERS and they should know damn well the difference between right and wrong.

It’s stuff like this that really infuriates me. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. You never want the first time your kid is in a fight to be in an uncontrolled setting …. and you want to teach your kids street smarts and common sense as well.

Parents, I urge you to send your kids to self-defense/street smarts classes. Throw them into controlled fighting/sparring. Let them know what it feels like to take a hit but not give up and end up beaten to within an inch of their life.

In today’s day and age, it is UTTER INSANITY to expect “it will never happen to my kids.” Even the most helicoptering of parents are away from their children during school or playtime….and their kids need to learn how to stand up for themselves and not get into dangerous situations in the first place.

I walk the walk I preach as well. I participate in adult sparring, and I have been kicked upside the head several times, knocked flat on my rear, ended up with rug burns and black and blue marks…but you know what? I’ve experienced it….I’ve learned I can survive it….AND I’ve learned that I can combat it as well and fight my way past it.

Give your kids the same gift of self-confidence.
