Morning!

Just came across this interesting article - to wit:

….If you knew your child committed a crime would you turn him/her in to the police? That’s exactly what one mother did in Wisconsin. When she saw a news report with video footage of her son and his friends, she called the police. The boys robbed a man, stealing his cash and credit card. Then they used the card to buy themselves food at a restaurant. They were acting suspicious at the restaurant where they were caught on tape.

I’ve heard several opinions on this from “heck yes I’d turn in my kid” to “oh no, in fact I’d hide him because it’s my job to protect him.” I’m more on the turn him in side. If you do the crime you do the time. We aren’t doing our kids any favors by protecting them rather than letting them face the consequences of their choices ….MORE….

I so agree with the author of this post. We as parents do our children zero favors if we do not let them experience consequences of dumb actions. I’m currently dealing with that now, as a matter of fact, in a starkly different situation - instead of stealing/breaking the law, one of my kids chose to “yes” me along, say what Mom wanted to hear, and then go her merrily un-academic way. Unfortunately for her, I chose to follow up with the teacher regarding kids’ action items….and found out they were not done.

What to do? I’ve decided to draw the line in the sand here. I figure that letting things ride now at this early age will only encourage even more slacking off. So major consequences have been implemented…and it’s a fair statement to say kid will be miserable for the foreseeable future.

Tough.

I am my children’s mom. I am NOT their friend, I am far and away superior to any friend imaginable.

I’m their mother.

And I will raise them to the best of my abilities….even if that means short term major emotional pain.

Data points,

Owlbert
