You know, I treasure
the reputation I have among my kids’ friends – mean Mommy Ling! I’m quite proud of the fact that my kids know their boundaries, know right from wrong, and also know that Mom will NOT rescue them if they choose to act irresponsibly.
I just read another blog post over at Teen Coach that really warmed the cockles of my heart. To wit:
….She let the rabbit out in his run and went off to school then came home and forgot all about him. The next day she got up to go out and see him and he was gone! She was in tears, so we asked her what she wanted and consequently, went to help her look for him. He was nowhere to be seen. Now, as tempting as it was to say, “This is what you get for not looking after him!” we did not. She went off to school, returned and the rabbit could still not be found.
By now, we all got the distinct feeling that that rabbit was not returning. So an upset Bronte came into the house in floods of tears, so I cuddled her, allowed her to have the emotion without trying to fix it. My instinct was to rush out and buy her another one to take away the pain, however I know this is an important lesson for her to learn. Next day, she was still upset and I still held back saying anything to try to fix the situation. That afternoon, she came home, still no rabbit. She came and sat next to me, looked at me and said ….MORE….
What an excellent job of parenting! Kudos to Coach Sarah.
