Is your kid going to graduate and work pouring coffee?

I just came across

this superbly brilliant article about your child’s college education and their job future. To wit:

…The CPRN says there “appears to be a mismatch between what young Canadians are being trained for and the jobs that are offered,” with the result that many end up pouring coffee, answering phones or toiling away at other low-paying, low-skill jobs, when they could be more gainfully employed.

The question, of course, is how to interpret and remedy the situation. One solution would be for young Canadians to stop training for jobs that don’t exist. Stop enrolling in colleges and universities and jump straight into the workforce after high school — or, for that matter, during high school. That way they wouldn’t be overqualified for barista work, and hence, presumably, would be feeling better about their lowly station in life.

Don’t want to hear that? OK, here’s another idea for young folk: Think carefully about what you might want to do with your life before embarking on a costly and time-consuming post-secondary education. What kind of job will be awaiting you upon completion of a four-year bachelor of arts degree in medieval history, psychology, philosophy or women’s studies? If you can’t come up with something concrete — a clear, linear roadmap from education to employment — the answer may well be Starbucks, GAP or Dell Helpline ….MORE…
