on MarketigPilgrim the following rather interesting post:

Pssst. Hey kid! Want to earn a quarter? Tell your friends about this cool new video game, and it’s yours.

Silly? Not really. Not when you consider a new survey out of the UK that suggests 49% of kids aged between 8 and 17 have a social media profile….MORE….

What does this mean for us as parents? Well, as our kids get more and more savvy online, they are exposed to both increased benefits as well as increased dangers (technical knowledge does not equate into common sense knowledge whatsoever).

Here are some resources to help you guide your kids well in the social networking world.

And here are some books as well.

Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens: Helping Young People Learn To Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly

Customer Reviews — Rating: 5 Date: 2007-10-22 Summary: A Voice of Reason I read Nancy’s latest book, Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, on a flight this past week, partly because it’s been sitting on my shelf for way too long, and partly because I knew I would be speaking a few days later to youth at a regional church meeting about technology in their lives. It is a great book on the Internet for parents, and don’t miss the good material that she provides at her related website, www.cskcst.com, that you can download and distribute for teaching. My audio interview with Nancy last year is …more
Editorial Reviews — Product Description | Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe online As our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens , Internet…more

MySpace Unraveled: A Parent’s Guide to Teen Social Networking

Customer Reviews — Rating: 5 Date: 2007-01-27 Summary: Well balanced, excellent guide This stands out as the best of the MySpace books I’ve read. It is logically organized and well presented, with color screenshots. The authors present a balanced approach to MySpace, without an alarmist attitude, but with very insightful observations and helpful suggestions, backed by cited research. Their approach is based in the reality of the Web and social networking, addressing the issues one needs to know while guiding the reader through setting up a MySpace account and using MySpace resources. Sprinkled throughout …more

How to Protect Your Children on the Internet: A Road Map for Parents and Teachers

Customer Reviews — Rating: 5 Date: 2007-10-26 Summary: Excellent, Comprehensive and Comprehensible resource Greg Smith has done a very good job of providing a comprehensive and comprehensible resource. While Greg’s approach to parenting might sound autocratic to some parents, but the fact is that it is ultimately a parent’s responsibility to protect his kid (not that school and society at large are not responsible to protect our kids). While it educates technically non-savvy parents with the innards of the technology, it also provides a clear strategy to adopt the technical tools, corresponding to each age group. It is not …more
Editorial Reviews — Book Description | The Internet has transformed the way people research, shop, conduct business, and communicate. But the Internet and technologies that enable online interaction and access to a variety of content can be a perilous place for minors 8 to 18. The dangers are real, and parents and teachers today are confronted with many threats they simply do not understand. This book shares the risks of the Internet by detailing recent, real-world tragedies and revealing some of the secrets of online activities.…more

MySpace Safety: 51 Tips for Teens and Parents

Customer Reviews — Rating: 4 Date: 2007-01-27 Summary: Worth considering if safety is your main interest This book is written (obviously) from a purely safety perspective. While not entirely alarmist, the authors present guidance on using MySpace from the standpoint of minimizing the risk of contact from members with “malicious” intent. Minimizing that risk is not just about minimizing visibility on MySpace, so there are warnings and advice throughout the book as it steps through the process of signing up and using MySpace. Notably, the authors’ philosophy on parenting teens using MySpace is to get to know their world …more

The authors provide specific methods to minimize the risk that comes with having a MySpace.com account. Each element of personal information requested by MySpace is analyzed to determine how the data is used. MySpace 4 Parents: Learn How To Protect Your Child In MySpace

Editorial Reviews — Book Description | Parents today feel they should know more about what their kids are doing online on MySpace but many times the lack of general computer skills and the knowledge of specific ins and outs of how to get around MySpace intimidates them into inaction. In MySpace 4 Parents the author, Marc Harris, starts from the beginning. If you can turn your computer on and off, use a keyboard and mouse and get on the internet, you are already qualified to use this book to become a MySpace expert. MySpace 4…more
