Hanging up my BJJ gi

I suppose

it was just too good to last. The person who teaches me BJJ told me he won’t be teaching at the place during the day classes I attend (which are advanced, even though I’m a beginner). Ergo, that particular location is no longer viable for my training.

This is lousy on all sorts of levels, the main one being, it was impossible finding this place in the beginning! I’ve heard that a BJJ location will open nearby me soon, so perhaps in the future I can start it again.

Now, you might remember….last week I bought my first BJJ gi (a Century blue for about $20 or so from eBay). Never did get a chance to wear it in class…. :(

So! Instead of angsting about the way things are, here’s what I did.

First, I channeled my frustration and wrote the blog post “You’re too freakin’ old to learn how to make money with a blog – HAH!” Not only was I older than everyone there, I was also the only woman who worked out too.

Next, I hung up my gi right next to my computer where it’s happily decorating my office this minute.

Whenever I look at it, I remind myself:

To hell with what people THINK you’re capable of doing – what matters is what YOU BELIEVE.

I believed I could do BJJ at my age…and I did. Not too many of my peers can say the same!

And in other news, my eldest daughter made me a Mother’s Day book that literally brought tears to my eyes. I have to scan it and post a picture – it really drove home the point that life’s daily soap operas are really trivia; family is what counts.

Today I’ll be taking the family to see Speed Racer (yay!) and meet up with a great friend as well. Oh yes, and it’s garage sale day! Not to mention, the kids want to attend kata class, so it will be a very full day indeed.

Time to make the coffee,

Barbara

Sometimes reality is heck

Morning,

I really think I now possess enough character that future character-building is really, ahem, not necessary! Are you hearing me, destiny?

It’s apparent to me that while I’m healing well, bicep-wise, I’m really regretting letting go of several martial arts activities (sparring to be precise). So I’ve been finding myself just staying away from the dojo except for when my kids need to go. Running away from issues, while not an optimal way of dealing with things, really does have its benefits! :)

I’ll probably return next week thereabouts.

In other news, I wrote a great post about customer Mind Reading and also how to create a useful site survey. Getting lots of good feedback from that.

NJ Ask is almost done! I’m looking forward to the weekend. Going to write up a great personal letter for my mom, find a great gift, and hopefully relax with my family too. Have to get writing the Mother’s Day sequence of posts as well.

Always things to do,

Barbara

A bionic beak for a bald eagle

Morning,

Fatal error: Class ‘expKrc’ not found in /home/ling1/domains/virtual-coach.com/public_html/php-bin/eBay_cls.php on line 138
Share this one with your kids:

… She has been named Beauty, though this eagle is anything but.

Part of Beauty’s beak was shot off several years ago, leaving her with a stump that is useless for hunting food.

A team of volunteers is working to attach an artificial beak to the disfigured bird, in an effort to keep her alive.

“For Beauty, it’s like using only one chopstick to eat. It can’t be done,” said biologist Jane Fink Cantwell, who operates a raptor recovery center in this Idaho Panhandle town.

“She has trouble drinking. She can’t preen her feathers. That’s all about to change.” …MORE….

What's YOUR story?

Morning,
Please click here to continue your search.

So much writing to do, so little time.

WelcomeI’ve been taking my own advice lately and singing my own song regarding making money online. Thus, I’ve put up a nice Welcome Message to my entrepreneurial site and also wrote:

What’s YOUR Story?

Walking the walk I always talk, I give away a complimentary copy of my popular ebook The Beginners Make Money Cookbook online. I’m interested to track the reactions.

In other news, I have yet to make any final decisions regarding my martial arts. Not facing the facts is right now mighty appealing, so I’ll probably stay in that holding pattern for quite awhile.

Family-wise, Honorable Son I finally realized that Gee! Mom DOES come down on me if I choose to neglect my homework! Not only that, but Mom removes the computer as well. Methinks the point is getting made.

Time to make the coffee,

Barbara

Teacher fired for being a wizard and using magic tricks to engage students

following @Dayngr, I just learned about:

Florida Teacher Fired For Being A Wizard:

…A Florida school district made a substitute teacher disappear after he showed students a magic trick. Jim Piculas made a toothpick vanish, then reappear. The act was even caught on video.

The school district accused him of wizardry. But they said the trick was the tip of the iceberg ….MORE….

And people wonder just WHY America is starting to lag behind other countries as well. :(

Forget mood rings – figure out your kids mood with an LED Pen

So you have

a sullen teenager who is implementing the trademark “Hey! I’m a Sullen Teenager!” attitude but because you’re still half-asleep, you haven’t yet noticed the glaring warning signs.

But not to fear! To wit:

…But every once in a long while, it comes up with something we’d actually consider buying. And this is one of the exceptions: an LED message pen. We have no idea why–it’s not as if we need one to advertise our business or anything, though it would be pretty nifty to have one that lit up with “Crave.”

Maybe it’s just the notion that we could change our personal message at will, kind of like an LED mood ring, to let everyone around us know if they should keep their distance ….MORE….

The birth clock (not what you'd think!)

Now this is

Fatal error: Class ‘expKrc’ not found in /home/ling1/domains/virtual-coach.com/public_html/php-bin/eBay_cls.php on line 138
a truly brilliant idea! To wit:

…The “Birth Clock” is a fragile glass object containing a digital clock that is not working; it is designed to help you to come to a decision when you’re stuck at a specific point in life. Smash the glass, and the clock will start to work, leaving you with the broken object as a reminder of your dramatic decision. Leave the object as it is, and you remain out of time, having the beautiful object as a reminder of your resistance to change. What would you do? …MORE….

I first read about this over at Make Magazine. I love the idea – what a super way to indelibly etch in your mind the moment the key turned and you were committed, come hell or high water, to making a change!

Enjoy,

BJJ, site building, book writing and more

Morning!

Amazingly enough, I’m actually able to write at my usual time in the morning (compared to yesterday, when I worked straight until 2pm and wrote my morning post at 2:07pm).

Physical-wise, life has been better, I will admit. Last week I had to bow out of all my major martial arts class due to my bicep. This week, it’s doing better, but common sense dictates that I stay out of it again.

This is more painful to me then one would think – I truly adore adult sparring, BJJ and the like and don’t want to give them up. I really come alive during all of those practices and make up for my lost time when I never did try out martial arts in my younger years. So we’ll see.

So! I’ve gone to ground and am spending my time writing, blogging, site-updating and teaching (okay, all together now – so what’s new, Barbara? :) ).

Kid-wise, it’s the state ASK test. Wheee! I remember those from my halcyon days. No homework these days, so I have my kids learning extra-curricular things like blogging online. :)

Time to start the coffee,

Barbara

Easy way to remember credit card numbers

Do you have
Please click here to continue your search.

bunches of credit cards…and need to remember critical pin numbers and other resources?

If so, allow me to direct you to One PIN To Rule Them All, One PIN To Find Them, One PIN To Bring Them All And In The Memory Bind Them – to wit:

… Like me, you probably have a half dozen credit, debit and bank cards in your wallet, all with different PIN numbers. Now, I have trouble remembering my address, not to mention my wife’s birthday (07/28, dear), and the only way I remember our anniversary is by scheduling my yearly checkup for same day (nothing like a prostate exam to remind you it’s a special day!)

So remembering a half-dozen different PINs is out of the question. As is writing the PINs on the cards themselves, which my friendly neighborhood banker frowns upon. And yet, that’s exactly what I do — without in any way compromising the security of the PIN. In fact, all I have to do is remember one 4-digit number, my Secret PIN (or SPIN for short).

It all works through the magic of modular arithmetic — which is just like regular arithmetic, except without all that annoying carrying and borrowing ….MORE….

What he suggests makes mighty good sense! You should definitely check it out.

Enjoy,

Owlbert

Morning posting at 2pm!

Morning!
Please click here to continue your search.

Okay, well….it’s not. ’tis the joys of being an entrepreneur.

This morning, I discovered that my brand new wordpress theme that I had crafted soooo carefully for BarbaraLing.com …. breaks with IE6. Joy! Not! So I spent all of this morning fixing it (one of the benefits to being a techie sorta mom). And the last consensus seems to be – it works okay!

Wheeeee! That’s why I’m posting my usual 4am or 5am post at 2:09pm; I finally can take a break to write it. :)

So! Workwise, things are humming along great. I’ve told my husband that he’ll have to handle some of the site-building; I’m writing two book concurrently and add that to raising the kids….I’m fast running out of available time.

And in other news, my daughter has finally realized that gee! Mom really WON’T buy me an iPod…I have to work for one! So she’s asked to start her own blog online and so far, it’s moving along swimmingly. Life is truly good.

Back to writing,

Barbara
