Rain and pain

Morning,
Please click here to continue your search.

Today’s phrase of the day is “Courage consists of hanging on, one minute longer.”

My gosh, it really does.

“Competence”, on the other hand, doesn’t consist of that. However, competence will come.

Yesterday’s martial arts was quite a learning experience. I discovered I’m extremely reluctant to kick during sparring which really puts me at one heck of a disadvantage. BJJ-wise, there were only 2 other students there so I got lots of mat time. Slowly but surely, the knowledge is building there.

It’s a rainy day today, perfect for doing the circle walk! The boys want to do kata class today so I’ll bring them there and then stay for bo-staff/advanced. Bo-staff is tons of fun; I really enjoyed it last summer.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes I ask my guardian angel, why now? Why here? Just plain why? I really wish I knew.

Time to start the day,

Barbara

Twitter helps save the day regarding a student's arrest

Morning,

I had heard about this two weeks ago but now it’s being picked up by mainstream media. To wit:

…James Karl Buck sent a message using Twitter which helped get him out of an Egyptian jail.

Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and his translator Mohammed Maree were arrested April 10.

On his way to the police station, Buck took out his cell phone and sent a message to his friends and contacts using the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The message only had one word. “Arrested.”…MORE….

Fascinating reading and one that you should certainly share with your children. It’s a testimony to the power of technology.

Enjoy!

1,380 mile round trip drive

Coming home has to be one of the most wonderful things a body can do.

After 3 days and 1,380 miles, I’m finally back home and ready to tackle work again. This was a great test of WordPress – prior to leaving, I just about all of me blogs with content so it operated on autopilot while I was gone. Nice!

Today is BJJ in the morning, followed by sparring in the evening. I missed Tuesday’s class so I’m looking forward to getting back into the groove.

Workwise, time to start CSMM – it’s a grandiose concept I have but one that can work if I tackle it methodically. Should be quite interesting to see how it plays out.

Time to make the donuts,

Barbara

across my radar earlier today – 100 sites to find the Elite in Any Given Field.

So! If your college grad is looking for a position, don’t just settle for Monster.com and the like…also have her or him explore the niche jobs resources available online. Who knows, it might give them quite the edge.

And how has your Spring Break been? My kids have been enjoying a wonderful time, I’ve practiced my martial arts, the Twitter budgies are happily decimating my office and, well, life is quite good indeed.

I’ve been thinking about what is involved with creating online products…while at first glance it’s, well, huge, if you put together a streamlined process, it all comes together in one smooth package. I’m talking about including:

  • helpdesk
  • live chat
  • autoresponder sequence
  • report
  • newsletter
  • subdomains
  • eBay
  • automatic digital delivery

and that’s just the beginning. Hmmmm.

Summer-wise, Camp Ling 2008 plans are moving along most swimmingly. Can’t believe school will be over in less than 2 months! What a journey it’s been for my kids; they’ll have earned the summer.

Time to start the day,

Barbara

DCI The Countdown! The Major Leagues of the Marching Band

Morning!
Please click here to continue your search.

And where will YOU be tomorrow?

I know where I’ll be – watching DCI The Countdown!

Now, if you’re the parent of a marching band kid (or, ahem, a marching band kid now grown up and a parent), you KNOW this is the movie event to rival Star Wars III! To wit:

…Coming to National CineMedia theaters across the country on Thursday, April 24, Drum Corps International’s spring cinema event, “The Countdown,” will feature six full-length corps performances from among the 36 DCI World Championship finalists of 2005, 2006 and 2007 ….MORE….

Nothing but nothing beats it.

DCI rules. Period.

And you can find the theaters that will show this masterpiece over at the CountDown Theater list.

Is your kid going to graduate and work pouring coffee?

I just came across
Please click here to continue your search.

this superbly brilliant article about your child’s college education and their job future. To wit:

…The CPRN says there “appears to be a mismatch between what young Canadians are being trained for and the jobs that are offered,” with the result that many end up pouring coffee, answering phones or toiling away at other low-paying, low-skill jobs, when they could be more gainfully employed.

The question, of course, is how to interpret and remedy the situation. One solution would be for young Canadians to stop training for jobs that don’t exist. Stop enrolling in colleges and universities and jump straight into the workforce after high school — or, for that matter, during high school. That way they wouldn’t be overqualified for barista work, and hence, presumably, would be feeling better about their lowly station in life.

Don’t want to hear that? OK, here’s another idea for young folk: Think carefully about what you might want to do with your life before embarking on a costly and time-consuming post-secondary education. What kind of job will be awaiting you upon completion of a four-year bachelor of arts degree in medieval history, psychology, philosophy or women’s studies? If you can’t come up with something concrete — a clear, linear roadmap from education to employment — the answer may well be Starbucks, GAP or Dell Helpline ….MORE…

Beautiful article, do check it out.Enjoy,

Pulling together a epic adventure in 3 easy lessons

Morning!

The sun is shining, the birdies are mooing and the cows are performing trigonometry and I have so much work for 2008, it’s insane.

I need to:

  • update all the IM how-to books I’ve written (pain)
  • update all the sites that use the CJ eBay information (beyond pain)
  • revamp the TAA sites (agony beyond comprehension)

If that wasn’t enough, I do have my relaxation – I have several karate katas on disk and can transcribe/practice/master them. Knowing me, however, it will be quite the, ahem, mental struggle to take care of myself while I’m staring at all these to-do thingees.

Family-wise, kids are peachy; spring break has sprung, the TwitterBudgies have taken over the family room and all is as it should be.

Time to revisit the templates,

Barbara

Solar-powered brainwaves

I wonder how
Please click here to continue your search.

this can be applied to my kids?

….With all the development of alternative energy today, it was bound to come to this: Introducing solar-powered brainwaves.

Well, not exactly. But this “electroencephalogram device” does use sunlight as well as body heat as a power source for a variety of functions, which researchers hope will include everything from playing video games to monitoring hospital patients, according to Dvice. The lightweight headset, developed by Belgian scientists at the Interuniversity Microelectronics Center, tracks electrical impulses generated by thought or action ….MORE…..

this incredibly hilarious compilation – warms the cockles of my heart. To wit:

… especially gems like:

Someone says, “What are the odds?” and you calculate them.

You have no life and can prove it mathematically.

Your fraternities make Flash websites to promote their party.

You’ll assume a “horse” is a “sphere” in order to make the math easier.

You recognize the fonts of your favorite stores

You label your personal possessions with your UNIX login (I still do this at home)

You know someone who failed all of his A and B term classes due to World of Warcraft.

You receive a job offer and celebrate by buying a LEGO set.

You met your life partner over the Internet in 1987You get excited about discovering fun UNIX commands:

  • cal xxxx (shows you the calendar for year xxxx)
  • cal n xxxx (shows you the n month of that year)
  • clock (exact time)
  • lynx URL (text based browser)

While watching the music video for Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” you try to identify the equation displayed in the background (it’s Schrödinger equation)

You consider it to be a good term if 2/3 of your professors speak English.
