about Star Wars? Well now, of course you do – it’s merely the MOST ASTONISHINGLY MAGNIFICENT CREATION OF THE 20TH CENTURY AND oh wait a sec, sorry, just trying to speak calmly about my favorite movie series.

Anywhos, if your kid knows about it, tell them….the technology they see there was conceived 80 years ago! I first learned about this from GeekDad – to wit:

Voice 17 years BEFORE Thomas Edison

Your kids probably know

about Thomas Edison – you know, the inventor of the Phonograph and all that great stuff?

Did you know he WASN’T the first to record voice? Neither did I! To wit:

…This weekend, Stanford University hosted the first public performance of the earliest known human voice recording–one that predates Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph by 17 years. The organization that made playback of the sound possible, First Sounds, has also posted the recording online for the public.

The recording, or “phonautogram,” was made April 9, 1860 by French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville on a device he dubbed the “phonautograph,” which recorded sound by scratching a piece of paper that had been blackened by the smoke of an oil lamp. It features a girl–possibly the inventor’s daughter–singing about 10 seconds of the French folk song “Au clair de la lune, Pierrot répondit.”

It’s SOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!

Keeping our kids straight – Backpack safety

Nowadays, it seems

like backpacks weigh only slightly more than a small Volvo. Is your kids’ backpack too heavy?

I recently found the site Backpack Safety and enjoyed some of the tips there myself. To wit:

Parents, teachers, school administrators and health care specialists are concerned about the issue of children’s health and safety with their backpacks. Children are hunched forward like peasants as they lug their books to and from school and between classes. Students are carrying 20 to 40 pounds in many cases, so this concern is legitimate. Common sense tells us that a heavy load distributed improperly or unevenly, repeated day after day, is indeed going to cause stress to a growing spinal column. “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”

There is a growing awareness of this problem globally as evidenced by media coverage from network television to syndicated newspaper columns such as Dear Abby.

The backpack is not the cause of the problem. Children simply haven’t been shown or taught proper methods of packing, lifting and carrying their backpacks…MORE….
