All About Entrepreneuring

Step 1 - What Does It Take To Be An Entrepreneur?

Are you cut out to be an entrepreneur? Check out this site and take this test to find out!

Seriously, it takes certain specific qualities to be successful as an entrepeneur. You need to:

  • Be creative. Murphy's Law decrees that things will always happen oddly when you least expect it. Well, maybe it doesn't quite say that, but the point remains. You need to bounce back and be creative when faced with new opportunities or crisises. The glass has to always be half-full, not half-empty.
  • Be patient. Success rarely happens overnight. You need to develop a valuable business and operation plan and see it through.
  • Be commonsensical. If something sounds too good, it generally is. You will make more money by working with your colleagues than by stomping on them. Deliver quality and your customers will be back again and again.

You know, just plain common sense. :-)

Step 2 - What Are The Good/Bad Points About Being An Entrepreneur?

Good points - Run your own business! Choose your own hours! Make your own money! Your success is dependent upon you!

Badpoints - Run your own business! Choose your own hours! Make your own money! Your success is dependent upon you!

See, it all depends upon your personality, current commitments, lifestyle and the like. Some folks love being part of a team environment - when you're an entrepreneur, often you'll find yourself working alone. If you run your own business and it doesn't make money, you're not fired, of course, you just don't have any money! If you have only 30 minutes a day to dedicate to it, and yet expect it to bring you zillions of dollars, you're doomed to disappointment.

But! And this is a big but! If you have a backup plan, time to dedicate, time to understand what's needed to make your buisness successful, love being the sole person in charge o everything and seeing your success soar, it's great. I love being an entrepreneur and would never go back to the corporate world again. Again, it all depends upon you.

Step 3 - Great Entrepreneur Resources

Lots and lots of great entrepreneur resources abound on the Internet! My favorites include:

Entrepreneurial Success Forum - Where lots of folks meet and chat and share ideas.

Entrepreneur-web - Excellent list of great resources you need to know.

Product Developers Forum - Again, a great place to hang out.

Entrepreneur Magazine - Lots of great user forums too!

Looking for books? Consider:

Losing My Virginity : How I'Ve Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way by Richard Branson - Book Description "Oh, screw it, let's do it." That's the philosophy that has allowed Richard Branson, in slightly more than twenty-five years, to spawn so many successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), to retail (Virgin Megastores), and nearly a hundred others, ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none.

Upstart Start-Ups Upstart Start-Ups! : How 34 Young Enterpreneurs Overcame Youth, Inexperience, and Lack of Money to Create Thriving Businesses - You're young and ambitious, with a great idea for a new software program, downtown music 'zine, or a better-than-Snapple beverage--but how do you turn your dream concept into a thriving business?

Glorious Accidents : How Everyday Americans CreateGlorious Accidents : How Everyday Americans Create Thriving Companies by Michael J. Glauser - he writes "This book was an absolute joy to write! I traveled around the country seeking out and interviewing some of America's top entrepreneurs. I interviewed men and women, blacks and whites, Asians, Hispanics and Native Americans. These people have all created companies that have succeeded beyond their wildest imaginations."
