The first thing you need to know about online dating is (and please write this down on a sticky note and tack it to your monitor) that it's a precursor to real life....but in the very beginning, that's ALL it is.

In other words, because you're meeting people virtually (so to say), in the very beginning you have no idea of the person you're interested in is what and who he or she says they are.

Not that this should stop you! Not at all. I've had very fulfilling friendships and even an engagement that started off via Internet correspondence. But unless you plan on actually living in cyberspace, eventually you'll consider meeting in real life the person who interests you.

That's when you can make a far more educated decision about potential companions. Until that moment, hold onto your heart and remember:

You're a precious gift! Do not bestow yourself upon unworthy people. Alas, there are cons and scammers all over the place...and the old adage still remains valid (if someone sounds absolutely perfect in the very beginning, it's probably too good to be true). Don't give yourself emotionally unless you're absolutely confident of the person.
